NORSCAND® Platform

Our flagship technology, the NORSCAND® electrolyser series, is a versatile range of cells designed for salt-splitting electrolysis. The proprietary NORSCAND® cells have been commercially proven for the production of high-purity lithium hydroxide from lithium sulfate or lithium chloride, and to recover acid and caustic from sodium sulphate. The NORSCAND® system can be adapted to meet different process chemistry needs.


Each NORSCAND® cell is a single element, membrane-based bipolar electrolyser cell designed for electrochemical salt-splitting. The core components of each cell include a titanium expanded mesh anode (typically coated with a mixed metal oxide), a nickel or stainless-steel mesh cathode, and one or more selective ion-exchange membrane(s).

A15 Commercial Electrolyzer

The A15 is one of NESI’s commercial-scale NORSCAND® electrolyser cells, designed for salt-splitting. Each A15 cell features a 1.5 m² electrode area with integrated gasket seals, electrical connections, and flow manifolds for brine and product streams. Cells are housed in a stackable frame assembly that allows electrolyser stacks to be built using 1 to 50 A15 cells, allowing scalable system sizes suited to project requirements.

A15 Demonstration Scale Electrolyzer

The NESI A15 Demonstration Electrolyzer is a modular system designed to validate electrolysis applications under real operating conditions. Built on the NORSCAND® Platform, the A15 Demonstration Electrolyzer integrates the company’s proprietary A15 cell technology with industrial-grade balance-of-plant systems. Typical demonstration systems contain up to six A15 cells with an operating capacity of up to 500 TPY LHM. The unit is engineered for industrial demonstration programs, allowing clients to evaluate product quality, energy consumption, current efficiency, operability, and integration with upstream and downstream processes before commercial deployment. NESI also operates an in-house A15 demonstration facility, enabling clients to conduct demonstration campaigns using their own process streams without the need to purchase or install a dedicated demonstration unit. This approach reduces capital requirements, accelerates project timelines, and provides valuable operating data to support scale-up decisions. The A15 serves as a bridge between pilot testing and full-scale commercialization, helping clients de-risk technology adoption and generate performance data for engineering, permitting, and investment decisions.

NS-12 Pilot Electrolyzer

The NS-12 is a pilot-scale version of NESI’s NORSCAND® A15 commercial electrolyser. The NS-12 cell provides an intermediate step between the NS-01 lab cell and the A15 commercial electrolyser with an active area of 0.175m². The NS-12 cell is the same height as the A15 commercial cell but is narrower. This cell therefore has the same hydraulic behavoir, pressure profiles, and relative per pass depletion as the commercial A15 cell.

The NS-01 is a laboratory-scale (active area 0.015m²) test cell version of NESI’s NORSCAND® A15 commercial electrolyser used to gather real-world data on membrane and electrode performance specific to the customer’s brine. Each NS-01 lab testing system is a complete system designed for long term performance validation testing. The NS-01 cell has been specifically designed to replicate the hydraulic conditions of the 100x larger A15 Commercial Electrolyser to ensure linearly scalable results from lab to pilot to commercial scale.

The NEO2™ (NORAM-Electrosynthesis Organic Electrolyser) is NESI’s purpose built 2 compartment organic electrolyser. In contrast to the NORSCAND® electrolyser series, the NEO2™ series are plate and frame style electrolysers which utilizes a graphitic/ metallic bipole.
