About Us

NORAM Electrolysis Systems Inc. (NESI) is recognized as a global leader in the research and commercialization of advanced electrochemical systems.   Our technologies and products target the electrification and decarbonization of key industries through large-scale electrolysis plants.   From the processing of battery-grade lithium hydroxide to power electric vehicles and to enable grid-scale clean energy, to lithium-ion battery recycling, to carbon capture, we provide electrochemical solutions that address the challenges of climate change, waste management, and pollution reduction.

Why Join Us

Purpose-filled, challenging, and interesting work. That’s a central pillar of NESI.  You will be working at the edge of the cleantech ecosystem and in the increasingly important world of critical minerals.  All within a collaborative, fast-paced, growing environment with room for innovation and professional growth.  NESI is small, close-knit organization with the dynamics and trajectory of a cleantech startup but with the key advantage of direct association with both NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd. (parent) and BC Research (co-located lab).

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrochemical Engineer for the design, development, and optimization of advanced electrochemical systems, with a focus on electrolysis technologies for industrial chemical production.

The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing electrochemical cell performance, durability, and scalability from laboratory development through pilot and commercial deployment. This role combines fundamental electrochemistry, applied engineering, and techno-economic analysis to deliver commercially viable industrial systems.

The Senior Electrochemical Engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical design, manufacturing, and system integration.

The role involves designing, developing, and optimizing electrolysis-based processes and systems.  Responsibilities include conducting experiments, analyzing performance data, modeling electrochemical processes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to scale up technologies for commercial applications. The Senior Electrochemical Engineer will also support technology implementation, troubleshoot technical challenges, and contribute to customer projects across diverse applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • The design and optimization of electrochemical cells and electrolysis systems. Develop electrochemical architectures including electrodes, electrolytes, and membranes.
  • Define and improve key performance metrics including faradaic efficiency, energy efficiency, current density, cell voltage, and lifetime and degradation rate.
  • Develop/select electrode catalyst formulations to improve reaction kinetics and selectivity.
  • Design and execute electrochemical experiments and testing protocols. Conduct electrochemical characterization activities.  Develop accelerated life tests and durability studies for electrolysis systems.  Analyze degradation mechanisms and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support scale-up from bench-scale cells to stack and system level electrolysers.  Provide electrochemical models and performance predictions for pilot and commercial systems.
  • Contribute to techno-economic models of electrolysis systems.  Evaluate impacts of electrochemical performance on System efficiency, capital cost, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).  Identify pathways to commercially competitive electrochemical processes.
  • Contribute to intellectual property including patents and publications.

Education

  • PhD in electrochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Equivalent combination of advanced degree and industry experience may be considered.

Qualifications

  • 8–15+ years of experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical processes, and related system development
  • Strong background in modeling, data analysis, and performance optimization
  • Proficiency in materials science, with a focus on materials used in electrochemical applications
  • Proven ability to work on process scale-up and implementation in commercial projects
  • Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting capabilities
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Experience in the renewable energy or chemical processing industry is a strong asset
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or eligible
  • Able to work in Canada without a visa
