About Us

NORAM Electrolysis Systems Inc. (NESI) is recognized as a global leader in the research and commercialization of advanced electrochemical systems.   Our technologies and products target the electrification and decarbonization of key industries through large-scale electrolysis plants.   From the processing of battery-grade lithium hydroxide to power electric vehicles and to enable grid-scale clean energy, to lithium-ion battery recycling, to carbon capture, we provide electrochemical solutions that address the challenges of climate change, waste management, and pollution reduction.

Why Join Us

Purpose-filled, challenging, and interesting work. That’s a central pillar of NESI.  You will be working at the edge of the cleantech ecosystem and in the increasingly important world of critical minerals.  All within a collaborative, fast-paced, growing environment with room for innovation and professional growth.  NESI is small, close-knit organization with the dynamics and trajectory of a cleantech startup but with the key advantage of direct association with both NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd. (parent) and BC Research (co-located lab).

Position Summary

We are hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work within and provide senior guidance to the NESI Mechanical Engineering Team Team for the design of commercial-scale electrolysis and chemical process plants, from front-end engineering through construction, commissioning and ramp-up. You will own the mechanical scope for rotating equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping and electrolyzer balance-of-plant, and serve as the technical authority who has seen similar industrial scale chemical process plants built and/or operated.

Key Responsabilities

Design & Engineering

  • Lead and/or guide the mechanical engineering and design for demo and commercial-scale electrochemical plants.
  • Specify mechanical requirements and procure pressure vessels, columns, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, blowers and storage tanks to ASME, API, and RTP-1 requirements.
  • Select appropriate materials for electrochemical service; define corrosion allowances and inspection plans.
  • Review P&IDs, datasheets, specifications, mechanical calculations and design basis documents.
  • Develop equipment layouts; direct piping design, stress analysis and pipe-support strategy for hydrogen, oxygen, caustic, brine and corrosive services.

Project Delivery

  • Run technical bid evaluations, vendor selection and factory acceptance testing for long-lead equipment.
  • Support HAZOP, constructability, and design-for-maintenance reviews; close out mechanical action items.
  • Coordinate with process, electrical, instrumentation, civil and structural disciplines to resolve interfaces and clashes.
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, startup and performance testings.

Leadership

  • Mentor and review the work of mid-level and junior mechanical engineers and designers.
  • Act as technical liaison with EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, owners’ engineers, and regulators.
  • Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
    • 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience in commercial-scale chemical, electrochemical, and/or petrochemical industries.
    • EGBC Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence, or eligibility and commitment to meet all requirements and apply for one within 3 months of hire.
    • Demonstrated field experience: site support during construction, commissioning and operations, with direct exposure to troubleshooting.
    • Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII, B31.3 and TEMA.
    • Proven record designing equipment and piping for multiple different fluids and gases across all Fluid Categories.
    • Proficiency with pipe stress and equipment design tools such as CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, or Aspen EDR.
    • Extensive experience with metallic, FRP and other non-metallic piping systems.
    • Experience working with EPC contractors and equipment vendors on procurement, bid evaluation and factory acceptance testing.
    • Strong written and verbal communication; able to present technical decisions to owners, regulators and executives

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with chlor-alkali is a plus.
  • Experience with hydrogen safety design: hazardous area classification, ventilation, venting and flare systems, NFPA 2 and NFPA 55, ATEX and ISO 22734.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment reliability, and vibration analysis.
  • Exposure to FEA or CFD for vessel, nozzle, manifold or thermal analysis.
  • Experience with modular or skid-based plant design and shop fabrication oversight.
  • Prior service as a lead engineer or discipline lead on a industrial scale chemical process plant project.
  • Working knowledge of EU Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) and Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) .
  • WORKING CONDITIONS, COMPENSATION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

  • Travel: Up to 5% domestic and international, with site assignments during commissioning and startup.
  • Physical requirements: occasional advisory support in industrial environments, climb structures, and wear PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, FR clothing and respiratory protection as required..
  • We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants of all backgrounds. We will provide reasonable accommodation during the hiring process on request.
    • Extended Health Care (including prescription and vision plans)
    • Dental Care
