NORAM and Permascand Partner to Develop New Industrial-Scale Membrane Electrolyser Technology

NORAM Engineering and Constructors Ltd. and Permascand AB are pleased to announce a major joint initiative to develop the NORSCAND® Electrolyser, an advanced industrial-scale membrane electrolysis system designed to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation electrochemical technologies.

This collaborative development effort has received significant support through the EUREKA international technology development program, including funding from Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). The partnership combines NORAM’s process engineering and system design expertise with Permascand’s world-class electrode coating technologies and cell manufacturing capabilities.

The NORSCAND® Electrolyser is a versatile, flexible, multi-compartment electrochemical platform engineered to enable the scale-up and deployment of emerging electrochemical processes. NORAM will lead process design, mechanical design, system development, and testing, while Permascand will contribute its proprietary electrode coating technology and advanced cell fabrication expertise.

A key application for the NORSCAND® platform is the commercialization of alternative electrochemical production routes, including the production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide, a rapidly growing market driven by the global expansion of electric vehicles. NORAM has worked extensively with Nemaska Lithium in Quebec, Canada to advance an electricity-only process for converting raw lithium resources into high-purity lithium chemicals. The successful scale-up of this technology requires an industrial electrolyser platform—demand that has directly supported the development of the NORSCAND® Electrolyser.

The NORSCAND® platform represents a significant step forward in enabling clean, electrified chemical processing and strengthening the global supply chain for advanced electrochemical technologies.
